Hey There!

I am Nicole Fergesen, mama to four, new Iowan and part time New Hampshire girl. I believe in Jesus, live on coffee, and love functional fashion. I also dabble in home design and relentlessly find beauty in everything. Wife to Dustin, widow of Marcus, blending a family and finding grace in the journey.

Blending a family is really complicated. Honestly

Blending a family is really complicated. Honestly it’s a lot harder than I anticipated for a myriad of reasons. Most of the time it’s very rewarding, but I don’t want to paint the picture that it’s a fairy tale. We’ve been documenting our experience over the past year, hoping to offer insight for others who might walk a similar path. Or simply to share experiences for others who have encountered some of the tough situations we have. Or even to show a glimpse into our life so you may have empathy for what others experience (I know I didn’t get it before I was in this situation!). But before I hit publish, I wanted to loop others into the conversation. What questions do you have about blending a family? If you’ve already blended, what has been the hardest part? Best part? Our wedding wasn’t just about @dfergesen and me,

Our wedding wasn’t just about @dfergesen and me, it was a day to celebrate our families becoming one family. It was also a day to acknowledge the children all becoming siblings, and for mine gaining a dad. So to celebrate our anniversary we decided to have an annual “family date” to celebrate this momentous occasion for all of us. We had fun at a local farm with all the fall activities (in 90 degree heat 😅) and lots of quality time together. Then Dustin and I snuck out for our first baby free date for a nice dinner 🙌🏼 It was such a great day full of lots of reflection and gratefulness for what God has done in all of our lives!

Heaven gained a good one on Monday. You know those

Heaven gained a good one on Monday. You know those people who have the ability to make every person feel so special? Grampy was one of them. He was my biggest cheerleader showing horses, gave the best hugs, and was so generous. He would always find excuses to let me drive his truck and trailer (not sure I would trust a 16 year old to haul a 30 foot horse trailer 😆). He was probably the most stubborn person I’ve ever met, but also the most loving.
He was one of my favorite people in the world.
I’m so thankful we were able to make a whirlwind trip back to New Hampshire to celebrate his life, because it was worth celebrating.
Love you, Grampy.

I’ve pretty much fully adjusted to my arm being

I’ve pretty much fully adjusted to my arm being amputated. I remember the first few weeks and months after Marcus died I was just existing in a state where I was mad at the world. I was mad that everyone was continuing life as normal. My world had come to a screeching halt, how could everyone else keep going? I vividly remember cars passing me while on a run, on their way to work or simply living their normal life like nothing had changed. How can they not be paralyzed like me, unable to perform even simple tasks needed in life?

Fast forward to now and my wound has healed. I am thriving, just with my arm missing. My husband, the person I was committed to for twelve years, no longer a part of me. Then there’s days like today, where we should be celebrating him, and I’m reminded that there’s a part of me that’s gone. It stings, baking his birthday cake with our children, with him unable to enjoy it.

Happy 35th birthday, old man. I’m forever changed because of you. I’m thankful for who I became with you and proud of who I have become in your absence. You’d be so proud of your kids and how they’ve flourished in spite of the hardest circumstance. We miss you every day.

I hope heaven throws a heck of a party.
